Rainwater Harvesting 101 (Saturday, Dec 3)

December 3, 2016 by Sustainable Fairfax Leave a Comment

Rainwater Harvesting 101

Saturday, December 3, 10am-4pm

Location: Bragman residence, 30 Hickory Rd, Fairfax, CA 94930

PLESE REGISTER BELOW!

Learn to install rainwater harvesting systems in this hands-on workshop taught by experienced instructors from Greywater Action.

We will  install two types of rainwater harvesting systems:

1) a “dry system” with the downspout flowing directly into a 55 gallon barrel located next to a building
2) a “wet system” that allows rainwater storage to be located  away from a building—the rain will be piped from the gutter, under a path, and over to where it rises naturally into a large cistern.

We will also focus on beneficial “secondary use” of the overflow water from the barrel and cistern, directing it to infiltration in the garden rather than to the storm drain.

You will leave knowing how to calculate the amount of rainwater you can capture from your own roof, and have an idea of the types of storage that are available—so you’ll be all set to design your own system!

The workshop will take place at the Bragman residence in the Cascade neighborhood of Fairfax.  Larry Bragman is our Marin Municipal Water District representative (address to be provided following registration).

Instructors: Christina Bertea and Natalie Kilmer, Greywater Action

“Dry System”: rain flows directly into a barrel:

“Wet System”:  rain flows under a  pathway and back up into a cistern:

Laundry-to-Landscape Greywater Workshop- Oct 22

October 22, 2016 by Sustainable Fairfax Leave a Comment

Don’t Let Perfectly Good Water Escape Down the Drain!

Learn to install a simple laundry-to-landscape greywater system in this hands-on workshop taught by experienced instructors from Greywater Action.

Using water from your washing machine loads to irrigate your surrounding landscape can be a relatively simple way to conserve water, save money, and help Marin conserve water.  According to MMWD Conservation Manager Dan Carney, “Even when full, our reservoirs hold only about a two-year supply of water, so using water wisely is always important. We never know what the next rainfall year will bring.”

The workshop will take place at a residence in Fairfax, California (in the neighborhood of Manor Elementary).

This workshop is part of Sustainable Fairfax’s water conservation program, Take Action On Water: Go Blue!  This event partially sponsored by New Belgium Brewing and Marin Municipal Water District.
