SCHOOL AND LUNCH BOX SUPPLY SWAP

NOW until Saturday, August 24th!

Location: The outside alley at Indie Alley, 69 Bolinas Road, Fairfax

School supplies are expensive and are often made of materials that cannot be recycled. Sustainable Fairfax wants to connect people who want to get rid of school supply clutter with those who need materials for the upcoming school year!

Feel free to DROP OFF your unneeded school and lunch box supplies to the outside space at Indie Alley any time this week through Saturday, August 24. (It is the alley next to the FairHemp store).

Or, if you need supplies and want to cut down on waste, come by the alley this week to PICK UP any supplies you need. (We suggest not coming to pick up supplies until Wednesday).

Ways to reduce waste at Fairfax Hardware

  • You can skip the plastic bag and BUY YOUR SOIL IN BULK! Just bring your own container. Fairfax Lumber’s bulk soils and compost are manufactured from organic ingredients with no biosolids.
  • Fairfax Lumber will EXCHANGE your empty camp stove propane cylinder when you purchase a full ones. Every year in North America, 40 million disposable one-pound propane cylinders are used. The empty cylinders are often disposed of improperly, and pose a threat to our sanitation workers and are a financial burden on our national parks.
  • Fairfax Lumber gives away their clean durable plastic bags that they receive from product shipments. Check out the new bin, and save these bags from the landfill. Great for storage, pet waste and more. 
  • You can safely dispose of your batteries in their battery bin.

Farmer’s Market Waste-Free Shopping Tips

BRING YOUR OWN….

  • Reusable produce bags. Silo Pantry, a vendor at the market, sells beautiful reusable produce bags for $5 each. They are durable and a great way to go plastic-free!
  • Grocery bags. If you need one, pick up a free bag from the Sustainable Fairfax table. If you have extra bags you do not need, we will take them for others to use.
  • Container for berries. Leave the plastic berry baskets with the farmer for reuse. Plastic yogurt tubs work perfectly for bringing home berries!
  • Container for chicken. If you buy the whole chickens, consider bringing your own container. The wrapping is plastic coated, and is not compostable.
  • Mason jars for bulk pantry items. Bring your mason jar and get a discount from The Silo (see Vendor Focus below).
  • Plate, cutlery and napkins to eat at one of the many delicious food trucks!

The Silo Package-Free Pantry sells bulk grains, flours, rices, natural charcoal water filters, soaps, reusable produce and grocery bags and more. The owner, Andy, is so committed to a waste-free existence, that if you bring your own jars, he’ll give you significant discounts on the finest bulk food.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Join Sustainable Fairfax in striving to make the Market a zero waste event!

  • We are seeking volunteers to setup (~3:30-4:00pm) and/or breakdown (~8:00-8:30pm) the Eco-Station signage weekly through September. Equipment is light and easy to transport and setup.
  • We are also seeking folks passionate about waste issues to help staff the Sustainable Fairfax table next to the Eco-Station. Provide guidance to people as they dispose of their waste, and educate them on alternatives to single-use plastics. We’ll train you!

Marin Sanitary – Curbside Clean-Ups

CURBSIDE CLEAN-UP IN FAIRFAX – WEEK OF APRIL 29 – MAY 3

Marin Sanitary Service offers residential curbside clean-ups twice per year (fall and spring). These preset dates are determined by the town you live in.

During your clean-up week, you can put out up to 14 bags of extra material at no extra cost on your normal service day.

WHAT YOU CAN PUT AT THE CURB FOR CURBSIDE CLEAN-UP

  • Up to 14 extra bags or cans (2 cubic yards) of garbage, recycling, and compostables (yard/food waste)
  • Extra cans/bags can’t weigh more than 60 pounds
  • Extra cans/bags can’t be larger than 32 gallons in size
  • No bulky items like mattresses, appliances, and furniture (see Bulky Items pickup)

CURBSIDE CLEAN-UP DATES

Material will be collected on your normal service day during your areas’ scheduled clean-up week.

Curbside clean-up weeks are listed in the table below. If you do not see your area listed, you can use the cycle and tax body codes from your bill to determine what week we’ll be servicing your area.
