Slow Riders: Commuter Bike Ride to Larkspur Ferry

Join Sustainable Fairfax for…BAY AREA BIKE TO WORK DAY!

TIME: Meet at 6:45am sharp
Catch the 7:50am ferry to SF (or return to Fairfax with us)
MEETING PLACE: Marin Museum of Bicycling, 1966 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Fairfax, CA
BRING: ✔ Your Helmet  ✔ Water Bottle
DISTANCE: 6.7 miles at an easy pace – about 50 minutes

Celebrate Bay Area Bike to Work Day and join Sustainable Fairfax for a commuter bike ride to the Larkspur Ferry Building.

The bike route we will be taking is mostly flat – we stay off the busy streets and take back streets and bike paths. Part of the route meanders along Corte Madera Creek.  It is a beautiful ride, and a wonderful way to start the day!  First timers encouraged to join!

We will stop at energizer stations along the way as time allows.

Marin Sanitary – Curbside Clean-Ups

CURBSIDE CLEAN-UP IN FAIRFAX – WEEK OF APRIL 29 – MAY 3

Marin Sanitary Service offers residential curbside clean-ups twice per year (fall and spring). These preset dates are determined by the town you live in.

During your clean-up week, you can put out up to 14 bags of extra material at no extra cost on your normal service day.

WHAT YOU CAN PUT AT THE CURB FOR CURBSIDE CLEAN-UP

  • Up to 14 extra bags or cans (2 cubic yards) of garbage, recycling, and compostables (yard/food waste)
  • Extra cans/bags can’t weigh more than 60 pounds
  • Extra cans/bags can’t be larger than 32 gallons in size
  • No bulky items like mattresses, appliances, and furniture (see Bulky Items pickup)

CURBSIDE CLEAN-UP DATES

Material will be collected on your normal service day during your areas’ scheduled clean-up week.

Curbside clean-up weeks are listed in the table below. If you do not see your area listed, you can use the cycle and tax body codes from your bill to determine what week we’ll be servicing your area.

Fairfax Take Back Day

Location: Fairfax Pavilion Parking Lot, 142 Bolinas Road, Fairfax, CA

All Fairfax Residents! Do a little spring cleaning, and come to Fairfax Take Back Day for a one stop shop for recycling and safe disposal of these items:

→ Prescription Drugs and Medications- collected by the Fairfax Police

Household medications are the number one cause of childhood poisonings. And, they pollute our waterways when they are flushed. The DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back program safely disposes your medicines.

→ Electronics Waste- collected by Conservation Corps North Bay

Examples: computers, microwaves, iPods, printers, cell phones, TVs, remotes.  Please no batteries or bulbs.

Note: Bulbs and batteries will not be collected. Fairfax Lumber, Good Earth and United Markets collect used batteries. Fluorescent (CFLs), Halogen and LED light bulbs and batteries can be taken to the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility for safe disposal or recycling. Incandescent bulbs may be disposed of in your trash. 

→ Free Paper Shredding- service provided by Marin Sanitary Service

For Fairfax Residents Only. Shred your sensitive documents (up to 2 bankers boxes). Please no plastic, folders or binders. Staples/paperclips OK.

→ Mattress Recycling- collected by Conservation Corps North Bay

Drop off your old mattresses for recycling!  Bye Bye Mattress® is a program of the Mattress Recycling Council.

Also…. FREE COMPOST FOR FAIRFAX RESIDENTS!

Bring it Home! Free compost will be available for Fairfax residents at Take Back Day. This will be the first of several deliveries to be made by Marin Sanitary Service in 2019. This compost is made from the food and yard waste collected in your green curbside carts. Since the delivery is shared with all Fairfax residents, please do not take more than five 5-gallon buckets (which provides about a one inch cover for a 40 square foot garden).

Use of Compost: Compost is a soil amendment that improves the water-holding capacity and structure of your soil, but too much of it can harm your plants! It is recommended that you use no more than 1-2 inches on your annuals & perennials.

GETTING THERE: Walk, Bike or Drive through the drop off spots in the Fairfax Pavilion Parking lot. Please enter from Bank Street.

Sustainable Fairfax, Marin Sanitary Service, Conservation Corps North Bay and the Town of Fairfax bring this opportunity to Fairfax residents once a year.

Earth Day Community Conversation: Sustainable Fairfax & Zero Waste

Please join a conversation with board members of Sustainable Fairfax, learn about our four primary volunteer “Hubs,” and discover exciting ways to get involved. This is your opportunity to take community-based action to minimize our environmental impact.

The focus will be on our Zero Waste Program and the important paradigm shift taking place from disposable to REUSABLE! Bring your burning questions! This is an opportunity to get down and dirty about the truths behind the recycling crisis.

Refreshments will be served at 6:45pm.

Household medications are the number one cause of childhood poisonings. They also pollute our waterways (please do not flush them down the toilet!). The Fairfax Police will be collecting the drugs until 2pm. Please no liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches.

[box]This is part of the Drug Enforcement Agency National Drug Take Back program, an initiative that addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.[/box]
