The Community Seed Exchange is a free seed bank located in the Fairfax Branch library and maintained by Sustainable Fairfax. The Seed Exchange supports our community with pesticide free, non-GMO seeds. The program fosters resilience, self-reliance and a culture of sharing.

Getting Started

Our section in the library has lots of books and resources to help you get started. If you want to start reading at home, the Richmond Grows Seed Lending Library has all of their course handouts available online for free.

Why Save Seeds?

Humans have been saving seeds for over 12,000 years. Much of that knowledge has been lost along with significant biodiversity. In the last century, over 94% of our seed varieties have been lost.

When you grow and save seeds, you

• Develop seed stock that is well suited to our climate
• Strengthen local resources and our local food system
• Share free non-GMO seeds and decrease our dependence on agribusiness
• Create a culture of sharing and growing food

Donating Seeds

Anyone can borrow and donate seeds. Donating seeds allows our exchange to be well-stocked and self-sustaining. We welcome donations from your garden and unopened or partially used seed packets from non-GMO sources.
